When Trust Becomes the Danger: Community Screening Raises Awareness About Sex Trafficking

Human trafficking is often perceived as a distant issue—something that happens elsewhere, to other people. Advocates say the reality is far closer to home. Sex trafficking frequently occurs in familiar places and often involves people the victim knows and trusts.

That reality will be explored during a special community screening of Betrayed, a short film addressing human trafficking awareness, on Saturday, February 7 at 6:00 PM at the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning in Queens.

The film, written and directed by Trudy Knockless, examines how trafficking can hide in plain sight, often masked by relationships built on trust, friendship, and emotional dependence.

“Trafficking doesn’t always begin with violence,” Knockless said. “It often begins with trust—someone offering help, love, or protection. Betrayed reveals how easily that trust can be manipulated and why awareness saves lives.”

An Evening of Film, Dialogue, and Education

Organizers say the event is designed to be more than a film screening. It aims to educate the community and encourage open dialogue around a difficult but urgent issue.

The evening will include:

  • A cocktail hour and community reception

  • Screening of Betrayed

  • A cast Q&A

  • A facilitated discussion on human trafficking awareness, with a focus on sex trafficking

National data shows that many trafficking victims are recruited by someone they know, making education and community vigilance key components of prevention.

How the Community Can Support the Effort

The screening is supported through grassroots fundraising to help cover production, venue, and educational outreach costs. Community members interested in supporting the effort can contribute through the official GoFundMe campaign:

Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 5:30 PM to ensure seating before the screening begins.

Organizers hope the event will spark continued conversation and community engagement around an issue that affects people of all ages and backgrounds.
